AEP Ohio has deployed over 2,400 personnel across the state to respond to potential widespread power outages expected Friday. The utility company is on high alert as meteorologists forecast wind gusts reaching 50 to 55 mph throughout Ohio. Officials warn the severe weather could damage infrastructure and knock down power lines, prompting preemptive positioning of line workers and tree-trimming crews.
Utility Uses AI, Drones in Proactive Tree Management
AEP Ohio utilizes artificial intelligence and drone surveillance to monitor vegetation near power lines as part of a four-year proactive trim cycle. This strategy aims to remove hazardous trees before storms hit, improving general reliability and reducing outage risks during high-wind events. Crews are trimming vegetation nearly every day statewide.
Safety Protocols Urged for Downed Power Lines
Experts emphasize that downed power lines are extremely dangerous. The public is instructed to stay at least 30 feet away from any fallen wire and anything it may be touching. Residents who encounter a downed line should immediately call 911 and then contact their local power company to report the hazardous location.
Officials Recommend Emergency Preparedness Kits
In anticipation of outages, operations managers advise households to prepare emergency kits. These kits should include flashlights with extra batteries, ample drinking water, and fully charged cell phones and laptops. Having these supplies ready ensures safety and communication during any prolonged power disruption caused by the severe winds.
