What You Can and Can’t Control

It’s easy to spend your time worrying about things you cannot change.

You may worry about what other people think, whether someone will approve of your decisions, what happened yesterday, or what might happen tomorrow. The problem is that focusing too much on these things can leave you feeling stressed, distracted, and powerless.

A better approach is to understand the difference between what you can control and what you can’t control.

You cannot control everything that happens in your life. But you can control how you respond, what actions you take, and where you choose to put your attention.

Understanding this difference can help you reduce unnecessary stress and focus your energy on things that actually matter.

What Does It Mean to Control Something?

Something is within your control when your choices or actions can directly influence the outcome.

For example, you can control:

  • How you spend your time
  • The effort you put into your work
  • What you choose to learn
  • How you communicate with others
  • Whether you keep your promises
  • How you respond to difficult situations
  • The habits you build
  • The goals you work toward

This does not mean that controlling your actions guarantees a specific result.

You can prepare carefully for an interview, for example, but you cannot guarantee that you will get the job.

Your responsibility is to focus on the part that belongs to you.

What You Can Control

Learning what you can control starts with looking at your own decisions and behavior.

1. Your Actions

Your actions are one of the clearest things you can control.

You decide whether to start a project, make a phone call, finish a task, exercise, study, or take a break.

You may not always control the circumstances around you, but you can usually choose your next action.

Instead of asking:

“Why is this happening to me?”

Try asking:

“What can I do about it?”

That small change can move your attention from frustration toward action.

2. Your Effort

You cannot always control the results of your work, but you can control the effort you put into it.

For example, you can control whether you:

  • Prepare before starting
  • Practice your skills
  • Research your topic
  • Improve your work
  • Ask for feedback
  • Keep going when progress is slow

Effort does not guarantee success, but it gives you something productive to focus on.

3. Your Decisions

Every day involves decisions.

Some are small, such as what you eat or how you spend an hour. Others can have a much bigger effect on your life.

You can control the decisions you make based on the information available to you.

You cannot know every possible outcome before making a decision. You can only make the best decision you can with the information you have.

4. Your Boundaries

You can decide what behavior you are willing to accept from other people.

This includes setting boundaries around:

  • Your time
  • Your availability
  • Your personal space
  • Your work
  • Your relationships
  • Your communication

A boundary does not mean controlling another person.

It means deciding what you will do when a situation crosses a line that matters to you.

5. How You Respond

One of the most useful things you can control is your response.

Someone may criticize you.

A customer may complain.

A plan may fail.

Something unexpected may happen.

You cannot always control the event itself, but you can pause and decide how you want to respond.

That response can be thoughtful instead of automatic.

6. Where You Focus Your Attention

Your attention is limited.

If you spend hours thinking about something you cannot change, you have less attention available for things you can actually do.

For example, instead of repeatedly worrying about whether people will like your work, you can focus on improving the work itself.

Your attention is not completely controllable at every moment, but you can practice redirecting it.
